Bieb Café Sneek: Lecture on the Southwest Friesland National Landscape
- Wednesday 28 October
10:15 - 12:00
Nowhere else in the Netherlands will you find such a wide variety of landscapes so close together as in the Southwest Fryslân National Landscape. There you’ll find a coastline with cliffs, a clay region with medieval mounds and small dikes, seven picturesque Eleven Cities towns, vast farmland, and the rolling Gaasterland, where forests, meadows, and water alternate. Four distinct landscapes in a single region, each with its own history, nature, and character. During this lecture, you’ll learn about the unique qualities of this landscape. What makes this region so unique? Where can you still see traces of the past? And what do we actually mean by the “character of the region”? We’ll also look to the future. How do we preserve the landscape’s valuable features? What developments are possible without compromising its character? And how can we actually further strengthen that character? Sneek is located on the edge of the National Landscape, right in the middle of the clay region. You can recognize this open, expansive landscape by features such as hemp dikes, hemp polders, mounds, old paths, duck decoys, and canals. After this lecture, you’ll undoubtedly see the landscape around you in a new light. You’re welcome to visit the Library’s Bieb Café every week. Stop by for a cup of coffee or tea, a chat, and some friendly company. The Bieb Café is for anyone who enjoys meeting people, wants to get out of the house for a bit, or just wants to join in. There’s often something extra going on, such as an activity, a discussion, or a creative morning. Admission to the Bieb Café is €2.
