Three cheers of Gloria!
The Lutheran Bach Ensemble's Christmas concert is inspired by the shepherds in the field who heard angels singing the Christmas message: Gloria in Excelsis Deo.
Christmas Concert
By Antonio Vivaldi this December will sound his famous Gloria in D RV 589; from Johann Sebastian Bach's Hohe Messe, both Kyrie and Gloria will sound. Bach's Hohe Messe is the best-known choral work of the 18th century. It is often considered the ultimate highlight of Johann Sebastian Bach's vocal oeuvre. Today the choruses and arias from the Gloria text are heard here.
With the Quatre motets pour le temps de Noël, Francis Poulenc composed four different Christmas motets in the early 1950s, from the restrained and mystical O magnum mysterium (O wondrous mystery) to the exuberant Hodie Christus natus est (Today Christ is born), ending, of course, with Gloria in excelsis Deo again!
