Fries Shipping Museum Offers Free Admission During Open Monument Day

Saturday, September 12, 2026, is Open Monument Day. Many monuments in the municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân will be open to the public free of charge, and there will be plenty of cultural activities taking place at various locations throughout the city.

Museum Open for Free
The Frisian Maritime Museum is the place to be in Sneek to learn all about the rich history of Frisian seafaring. The museum also features many artifacts from both the past and present related to the city of Sneek and its iconic Waterpoort. As a city museum, we’re therefore opening our doors from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and everyone can enter for free! Throughout the day, there will be performances in the Gehoorzaal as part of the UITfestival. Enjoy dance demonstrations, a pop choir, music bands, and a spectacular performance by MUZT, among other things. The Advendo marching bands will also be making their way through the museum this afternoon. Of course, you’re also welcome to check out the newly opened SILA photo exhibition by Sacha de Boer.

Water Gate Also Open to the Public
On this special day, the Waterpoort will also be open to the public. Have you always wanted to see inside? Then this is your chance. Between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., you’re welcome to visit this iconic gate on the edge of downtown.
