Lecture: The history of navigation at sea
- Wednesday 11 March
19:30 - 21:00
Rob Leemans has a nautical and medical past. After starting out as a helmsman and naval officer, he studied medicine and became a trauma surgeon. However, the sea continued to attract him and he sailed for many years as a volunteer helmsman on the sailing seagoing vessel the Eendracht. He also re-entered the Navy as an active reservist, with several deployments as a war surgeon. After retirement, Rob was administratively active and currently engages in counseling, personal coaching and is a confidant. He also volunteers at KNRM station Harlingen and sails his own sailboat a lot.
Because Rob attended the Terschelling nautical college, he initiated the book Van gegist bestek to GPS. This describes the history of the nautical school and formed the basis for the exhibition "A Sea of Knowledge" at the Fries Scheepvaart Museum. In the presentation History of navigation at sea, Rob talks about these developments through the centuries. He will show many pictures and a number of appealing attributes.
The lecture starts at 19.30, walk-in with coffee/tea from 19.00. Admission: € 7.50, free entrance for members of the Fries Scheepvaart Museum Association and museum card holders. Please register in advance via balie@friesscheepvaartmuseum.nl or tel.nr. 0515-414057.
