But then he suddenly starts cursing and moving uncontrollably. At a time when Tourette's was barely understood even by doctors, he becomes excluded from the world around him: he is bullied at school and his relationship with his family deteriorates. John withdraws more and more, weighed down by fear, shame and loneliness. Everything changes when, in his twenties, he meets Dottie, the down-to-earth mother of a former classmate recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. The unexpected bond that develops between them changes John's life: with Dottie's unconditional support, he finds important purpose and the confidence to be himself. Honest, funny and deeply human. I Swear tells the inspiring, true story of Scotsman John Davidson, a leading spokesman for Tourette's who, with his sincerity, resilience and humor, helps the world understand what it means to live with the disorder. With the filming of John's story, director Kirk Jones not only underscores the importance of education, understanding and acceptance around Tourette's, but at the same time shows the power of friendship and communities. Thanks in part to a terrific cast led by Robert Aramayo, I Swear manages to touch many hearts. The film won this year's IFFR Audience Award and was also awarded three BAFTAs, including Best Actor for Aramayo and his moving portrayal of Davidson.
