MUZT Musical education plays Oliver!

The show is the last musical under the artistic direction of Iréne Martin, who is retiring from MUZT this season.

In recent weeks, the search for hints was in full swing. In the workrooms of the Atrium in Sneek, among other things, a dented top hat, a box of stolen jewelry and a staff of the governor appeared. Props that got the students on the right track step by step. In a short film, they finally got the final answer.

The choice of Oliver! was not difficult for Iréne Martin this year. For years, this musical had been on her wish list. In 2020 MUZT was already supposed to play the show, but that year the theaters remained closed due to corona. With Martin parting ways with MUZT this season and directing her last musical, now is the time to still make this musical a reality.

After the announcement, the roles followed and the students are working towards the performance in the coming months. They are rehearsing, building the set and working on costumes and wigs.

Lionel Bart's musical is based on Charles Dickens' novel Oliver Twist and is set in nineteenth-century London. In the workhouse, the tyrannical Mister Bumble is in charge, where orphans and other poor must work in exchange for shelter and a meager plate of porridge. This old healer trains children to become handy pickpockets, and the animated girl Nancy takes care of him. Her lover, the dangerous Bill Sikes sees a traitor in Oliver when Oliver falls into the hands of the police. While Oliver finds warmth in a safe house for the first time, others think only of betrayal and money. Will Oliver manage to free himself and find happiness someday?

Oliver! is a musical story about growing up, making choices and searching for a place where you belong, featuring such familiar songs as Tables Full of Cake, Hey, Join Us, Boom Daddy and Where Would Love Be.
