Sociaal Varen Sneek Makes Boating Dreams Come True on the Waters of Friesland
  • Friday 1 May t/m Thursday 1 October

A brief escape from everyday worries, the wind in your hair, and the water all around you. For some people, that’s anything but a given.  With that idea in mind, Sociaal Varen Sneek was launched in 2025: an initiative in which volunteers donate their boats and time to provide others with a relaxing boat ride. The project focuses on people with an illness or disability, their loved ones, and informal caregivers, as well as people over 50 and older adults living alone who need social interaction. Relaxation is the main focus during the boat trips: getting away for a while, enjoying the Frisian lakes, and the company of others.

The boat trips last an average of two hours and take place in and around Sneek. For people with a serious medical condition, the boat is made available exclusively to them, so they can cruise in peace and quiet together with their loved ones. Group cruises are also organized for seniors and those living alone, with a focus on socializing and making new connections.

Participation is largely free of charge: volunteers make their boats and time available at no cost. Participants pay only a small contribution toward fuel costs.

Through this initiative, the organization hopes not only to offer people a wonderful experience but also to inspire others to get involved. New volunteers with a boat are warmly invited to join.
