  • Sunday 22 March16:00 - 17:30

This masterpiece from 1887 forms one of the most beloved passions in the choral world. The atmospheric Sint Martinuskerk on the Singel in Sneek provides a fitting setting for this performance in the run-up to Easter.
John Stainer's "The Crucifixion" is the nineteenth-century equivalent of Bach's "Matthew Passion. It is a piece of music for mixed choir with soloists and organ accompaniment and was written specifically for the time before Easter. It is an emotionally musical rendition of the Passion and death story of Jesus and is loved by a wide audience.

The work consists of choral works interspersed with solos for baritone and tenor. Some of the choral works are performed a cappella and the rest with organ accompaniment. The work lasts approximately seventy minutes. Musical direction is in the hands of Sippie van Beijeren, Bergen en Henegouwen. The soloists are baritone Jaap de Kok, tenor Jeroen Helder and organist Bob van der Linde,

Involvement of the audience
A special feature of this work are the five "hymns" (chants), in which the audience is traditionally invited to sing along, increasing their involvement in the story. The music ranges from powerful choral pieces such as "Fling wide the gates" to the subdued drama of the finale.

The start of the concert is 4 p.m.
Admission is €20 , available to order until March 21 at penningmeester@sneekercantatekoor.nl or on March 22, 2026 at noon prior to the concert at the church.
