WALFISK in Sneek
- Thursday 27 November t/m Saturday 29 November
From sunset to 11 p.m., walk through a city that revolves around light, water and imagination. All media artworks are accessible completely free of charge.
The eye-catcher is Cetus, a six-meter-long light whale by the Berlin collective Loomaland. He glides through the canal near the Bothniakade, transparent and luminous. Sometimes he unexpectedly sprays a jet of water onto the quay. His presence refers to centuries-old sailors' tales of mysterious creatures from the deep.
But WALFISK is more than one whale. In the garden of the Fries Scheepvaart Museum awaits Octopus Garden by RaumZeitPiraten, a fantasy world of light, sound and movement in which you yourself become part of. On Havenstraat, reflections dance across facades in Brekend licht by Anne Fie Salverda. In the Doopsgezinde Kerk a beam of light spins through the space in Lichtkreet by Vincent Westra, a silent cry to be seen. And in the St. Martinuskerk, Tentacles of Change by Marsja van der Ven comes to life, made of steel and old machine parts.
Tip
If you want to discover more, stop in at the Fries Scheepvaart Museum. There, from November 21 to 30, is the Week of the Whale. Dive into the rich history of whaling, follow the whale facts route or play by the spouting whale in the museum pond. Sound artist Tristan Visser will show his new film Arctic Mirage on November 29, about the journey to the song of the bowhead whale. The Fries Scheepvaart Museum is open from 10 a.m. and on November 27 to 29 after 5 p.m. free admission for everyone.
Or combine your visit with Open Museum Month. In November you can visit 18 museums in Friesland, including the Fries Scheepvaart Museum in Sneek, free on presentation of a voucher, for residents and guests staying overnight in Friesland.
