Walking along the Steinzenflora of historic Park Jongemastate
- Saturday 25 April
10:30 - 12:00
Always wondered what went on behind those centuries-old gate doors of Raerd? Step into history and learn all about the noble Jongema's and their ornate stinzenflora.
Raerd colony
At the entrance to the village of Raerd, it cannot be missed: the magnificent gateway to a historic stately home called Park Jongemastate. Strategically located at the beginning of the Slachtedyk that protected the Friesians from the washing waters of the former Middelsee. Although the old state has disappeared, the original entrance building still stands proudly. Elongated trees line the moats and have housed a rook colony since time immemorial. The inhabitants of Raerd call them the Raerder rooks. A blue heron colony that is also located in the park completes the cacophony.
Noble flowers
But what this day is really about is the stinzenflora that blooms all over the park. Special bulbs and tubers were planted by the noble owners of the wooded park, and they still flourish there today. In winter, you can already admire the snowdrops and winter aconites - Ayttablomkes in Frisian - here. And when spring comes, the emperor's crown and spring chimes bloom in Park Jongemastate. Finally, the Italian arum with its striking orange berries closes the stinzenflora season here.
Look into the past
In 1515, the former stins had been set on fire by mercenaries of the Duke of Saxony. In the following years, a new state was built. The tour leader points out a viewer through which you can see an engraving of the state. During the excursion you will learn all about the mysterious castle and its former residents: the Jongemas and the Van Eysingas. About 100 years ago the building was demolished and It Fryske Gea acquired the park. Park Jongemastate is one of the oldest properties owned by nature society It Fryske Gea.
