Bartók wrote this work in 1936 at the request of a Basel conductor. It is a work for an unusual scoring with two groups of strings, piano, harp, percussion and a celesta. Bartók manages to create unprecedented new sound colors with this instrumentation. He also used many folk music qualities, but kept the classical structures of Haydn and Mozart. Thus he created one of the most important works of the 20th century.
