While her cinema colleagues are having fun, she stares sadly ahead. She is having a love and lustless affair. When the few visitors have left the movie theater, she slouches between the seats to clean up. Hilary is definitely not the person she once was, she tells her family doctor. When new employee Stephen, also a maverick, shows up at the complex, she perks up. The two find solace in each other - perhaps more than just friendship blossoms. The film is set primarily in and around a movie theater, which works well to situate this story. Hilary's colleagues make up a motley collection of supporting roles, especially Toby Jones as the mild-mannered operator Norman.Empire of Light has a fine, leisurely pace, and Roger Deakins' camerawork is truly superb.
