Ubuntu. A Zulu word, but a universal concept.
Umntu Ngmuntu Ngbantu literally means: A person is a person because there are other people.
Or in other words, I am because we are! This is the basis of the Ubuntu philosophy.

What can Ubuntu mean for you and me, for us? For the Western world that in the past centuries has achieved enormous technological realizations and created great material prosperity, but now cries out for attention to immaterial issues. For our dealings with the earth and with each other; a shift from reason to relationship.

During this evening Annette Nobuntu Mul takes you on a personal journey to South Africa in her search for what Ubuntu is and can mean. The country that is trying to heal old wounds after apartheid and that, with the power of diversity, rightly and proudly wants to be a rainbow nation. She goes in search of Ubuntu in contact with dear South Africans who have come along her life path. Often with a special life lesson. For her and for us. What can we learn from Africa, from Ubuntu? With her search for humanity in dealing - in all facets of life - with fellow human beings, Annette is making an important contribution to the path of shared humanity in our society. In her eyes, this means that in every personal, professional, organizational, religious or political encounter or discussion we can see each other, above all else, as human beings and recognize our shared humanity: I am because we are and we are because the earth is!

In this special co-production of the Philosophical Café and the Sneek Library, Annette will discuss the meaning of this thought-world of Ubuntu in our current social situation. How do we now concretely make the shift from our individual view of man to a world in which everything is connected. Your questions are also welcome this evening!
