Gysbert Japicx was born in 1603 at Wipstraat 6 in Bolsward, the son of Ancke Willems and Jacob Gysberts. Gysbert Japicx's father was a coffin maker and mayor of Bolsward and played a major role in the design of Bolsward's town hall.

The birthplace of Gysbert Japicx was purchased in 1979 by Arjen Holkema and Trijntje Holkema-Slot with the aim of turning the house into a museum. This to honor and keep alive the memory of their great ancestor.
