War Memorial (Martinikerk Sneek)

Oud Kerkhof Sneek -plan route

The monument designed by architect Arjen Goodijk with his brother-in-law, sculptor Willem Valk, depicts a standing woman with a ribbon of honor on an arcade-shaped brick wall. The statue is placed next to the Grote- or Martinikerk in Sneek and is made of French limestone (Vaurion). The ribbon of honor bears the text: FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH. Below that on the base of the statue: 1940 - 1945. Below the statue, on the wall are several plaques, including one in memory of the victims of the Sneker Bloednacht. The statue was unveiled on May 4, 1950, by Meta Lever, who lost her father and two brothers during World War II. The soft limestone became damaged over the years. So in April 2018, the statue was replaced with a granite replica.
