Welmoed van der Velde (IJlst) works as a lecturer in Maritime Law at the Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz of NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences. Together with students and partners from practice, she conducts research with the aim of making the maritime sector more sustainable, efficient and safe. Consider questions such as: Can a ship sail autonomously (without a captain)? And: How can we make ships sail cleaner to meet stricter environmental regulations?

One of the research projects (REMARCO | NHL Stenden) concerns the consequences of leaking munitions on the seabed. On the bottom of the North Sea there are still many wrecks from the First and Second World Wars. Ammunition was also dumped on the seabed after the end of these wars. Research has now shown that these munitions leak harmful substances. Together with partners from Belgium and Germany, Welmoed is investigating how to limit the harmful effects of leaking munitions and what the rights and obligations of countries are in this regard.

The lecture starts at 19.30, walk-in with coffee/tea from 19.00. Admission: € 7.50, free for members of the Fries Scheepvaart Museum Association and museum card holders. Please register in advance via balie@friesscheepvaartmuseum.nl or tel.nr. 0515-414057.
