Philosophical Café: 'THE LAST WORD', René ten Bos

It was once spoken in the name of God, but today we have more "dogmatic factories" than the church alone. For example, we hear management claiming the last word in the name of efficiency and the medical profession in the name of health. There is also much talk in the name of safety, justice and sustainability.

People who do not listen to this powerful speaking are routinely slammed as idiots because they do not realize what is good and bad for them. In his lecture, René ten Bos discusses the institutional, psychological and political mechanisms that explain why we are and remain so dogmatic. "Submission," he writes, "is the price we are all too willing to pay to become somebody."
