Auke van Gorkum 1896-1944 (resistance fighter)

Auke van Gorkum lived at Korte Veemarktstraat 8 in Sneek. He took over his father's café-restaurant located there, but sold that business in 1929. During World War II, Auke was a member of the resistance. He belonged to the LO-Sneek, the National Organization for helping people in hiding.

On October 5, 1944, Auke was clearing a house of a wanted resistance fighter when he was arrested. Auke was transferred to Leeuwarden, where he was severely beaten during interrogations. According to family tradition, Auke van Gorkum died of heart failure while riding his bicycle home from Appingedam.
